
Flammabowl Smoked Brown Ale Release Party
Join us on Saturday, May 27th at Portside for the Flammabowl Smoked Brown Ale Release Party. This beer was brewed in collaboration with former Ballast Point Head Brewer Colby Chandler. We will also offer our Festival Pizza and a BBQ menu prepared by Pizza Port Co-Owner Vince Marsaglia.
Colby recalls in April of 2023, drinking a delicious brown ale at CVB in Eastlake, which was the best he has had in a while. So, when Ignacio Cervantes, the brewer of that beer, asked me to brew a collab with him, Jake, and Jerome at Pizza Port Carlsbad, I knew which direction I hoped the collaboration beer would go. Nacho had never smoked beer or toasted oats in the pizza oven. So, a recipe for a “Pocho” inspired Smoked Brown Ale was written. The Flammabowl Smoked Brown recipe consists of 40% Weyermann Beechwood malt, Marris Otter, Toasted Oats, and a variety of dark specialty malts. Fuggle hops and La Cruda yeast round out the ingredients and help showcase the malts.
"I have respected Pizza Port for many, many years now. Pizza Port Solana Beach was the first brewery I applied to in 1997. Pizza Port Carlsbad was the first place I served a beer, that I brewed professionally. 8% Crystal Pier Hoppy Strong Ale (precursor to Dorado Double IPA) was poured at the 2nd Strong Ale Fest, in 1998, there were no Double IPAs yet", Chandler explains.
